Dental Implants in South Calgary, AB
Missing teeth make eating, speaking, and smiling difficult, and choosing the right way to replace a missing tooth is a highly personal decision. We will present all of your options and help you choose one that’s right for you.
Dental implants are gaining in popularity because they replace the entire tooth and offer a long-term solution to complete the function and appearance of the smile. We offer complete dental implant procedures in our South Calgary, AB dental office.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
Many dental implant systems exist. Most commonly, single dental implants will consist of three main parts.
Dental implant post – The dental implant post is a titanium screw that replaces the root of the tooth.
Implant abutment – Using a small attachment, we will attach the dental implant to the crown.
Dental implant crown – Your crown is the part of the implant that fills the gap in the smile. At Legacy Dental Care, we design dental implants to match the surrounding teeth for aesthetic results.
Dental implants require adequate bone for support. A full evaluation will determine if you have sufficient bone for surgical placement of the implant or if additional procedures, such as bone grafting, could be of benefit to you.
By taking x-rays, moulds of teeth, and planning for the ideal location to place the dental implant, our dentists increase the success rate for dental implant treatment.
Dental Implant Placement and Restoration
Dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone. While this may sound like an invasive procedure, bone does not contain the same number of nerve endings as the teeth and gums, so most patients tolerate it quite well.
Inflammation and mild bruising do sometimes occur. We will discuss how to manage any discomfort post-surgery to improve your comfort.
Dental implants need time to integrate with the bone. Your dental implant post is made of biocompatible titanium so that it will fuse with natural bone for stable results. This process, called osseointegration, takes approximately 3-6 months and may be longer for people who smoke.
Placing the dental crown will complete the smile. Our dental laboratory custom creates each dental implant crown to match your smile and fit with your bite.
In some cases, implants fail, and this is typically due to poor oral hygiene that leads to gum disease. When advanced gum disease attacks your jawbone, it compromises the stability of your implant.
Protecting Your Investment
A commitment to diligent home dental care by brushing and flossing correctly each day along with professional dental cleanings and exams will support the longevity and healthy function of your dental implant.
